Relationship Counselling

Restore harmony and connection in your relationship with psychologists experienced in relationship counselling.

Relationships are a work in progress. Commitment, loyalty, communication and managing conflict all play an important role in ensuring its success. A h3 relationship is when two people come together to support each other’s hopes and dreams and have a mutual understanding and respect for each other’s values.

Relationship counselling might not be the answer to all your problems, but it is certainly a step in the right direction. It is never too late to try and work things out and ask for your help.

Relationship counselling can provide support and help in the following areas:

  • Increase mutual respect, affection, and closeness between you and your partner
  • Develop greater understanding
  • Conflict resolution and communication
  • Depression and Anxiety or other Mental Health concerns
  • Anger management
  • Sex difficulties
  • Recovering from an affair
  • Alcohol and substance abuse
  • Parenting

What happens in Relationship Counselling?

You will first meet with your psychologist together as a couple then individually for the next few sessions. We first want to understand your personal and relationship history, the problems you and your partner might be facing, as well as establishing what you would like to achieve during your counselling sessions.

Our Perth based Relationship Counselling Psychologists are proud to be approved members of the Gottman Relationship Check Up assessment service. This service is a research-based assessment tool for counsellors to use with couples as a method for learning the strengths and challenges of a relationship, and to determine a treatment plan.

This world-renowned program uses assessment, therapeutic framework and interventions to help couples strengthen their relationships. The program helps couples learn to replace negative conflict patterns with positive interactions and to repair past hurts.

What type of Marriage Counselling therapy do you use?

Gottman method therapy, cognitive behavioural couple therapy and interpersonal therapy will all be available to use during your marriage counselling journey.

How long are the sessions?

The first session that forms part of your assessment and goal setting is 1hr and 20 mins in duration. The next one to two intervention sessions are generally 50 minutes each. From that point, you have a choice to continue with 50 minute sessions or 1hr and 20 minute sessions.

Most couples attend between 8 and 24 hours of therapy across a 12-18 month period.

Can I get a rebate for Relationship Counselling?

There are two types of consideration for rebates including Medicare rebates and Private Health Fund rebates. If you have a diagnosed mental health condition such as anxiety or depression and your G.P accepts that interpersonal therapy is a suitable method for intervention you may receive a Medicare Rebate. Private health rebates may apply for Psychological services, but we recommend checking with your health provider first.

FAQ

Our appointments are either 50 mins or 80 minutes of face-to-face time (i.e., time you meet with your psychologist). The remainder of the session is to make notes and prepare for your next session, this ensures that our sessions start on the hour or half hour. Initial individual appointments are 50 mins and couple or family appointments are generally 80 minutes.
Everyone’s journey is different however, it generally takes about 3 sessions to establish your concerns, discuss a bit of the history of the problem and agree on how you and your therapist will work together and what you will work on. From here there are Australian Guidelines for Evidence Based Treatment for Mental Health conditions. For depression/anxiety a minimum of 6 – 14 sessions may be required, for PTSD this may be up to 24 sessions (for complex PTSD) for couple’s experiencing a lot of conflict this can be around 16-24 sessions.
In the beginning you will need see your therapist weekly to establish your therapy and build some traction. This takes a minimum of 3 sessions we recommend you book these in on your first appointment. After this, therapy needs to be paced according to your issues, the therapy style your therapist is using and even your financial considerations. Some people come fortnightly, others monthly.
Once you book an appointment its yours. We encourage you to keep your appointments to avoid delays in booking new ones and to speak with our team members about discontinuing therapy. If there is no way you can make it please call reception to reschedule.

If there is no way you can make a skype session and you need to change or cancel an appointment, please provide at least 48 hours notice otherwise there are cancellation fees.

All of our team members are registered psychologists so you are able to claim Medicare or Private Health Fund rebates (you can only claim one or the other per session). Medicare provides a rebate of either $84.80 or $124.50 back per session for up to 10 sessions per calendar year provided you have a Mental Health Plan drafted by your GP and a referral letter to any psychologist. After the initial 6 sessions you need to return to your GP for a review to access the final 4 for the calendar year. Private health rebates are available provided you have cover for psychology.

We offer appointments between the hours of 9 am and 7pm Monday to Friday and 9 am to 2 pm on Saturday. Individual psychologist availability varies, please contact reception for more information.
