Trauma Therapy
Improve your physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing.
Trauma can be behind many of the problems you are facing in your life including depression, anxiety or addiction problems.
Rape, torture, accident, illness, bullying and abuse are all traumatic experiences. It can feel like you are living in a personal hell when you are constantly dragged back to past events. Sometimes you can encounter the smallest subconscious trigger that might remind you of the original trauma. Flashbacks to past events can take away your happiness and self-confidence, while constant nightmares can cause disrupted sleep.
Trauma is not driven by thoughts, it is driven by emotions. Working with an experienced psychologist is imperative because we know how to treat it. Trauma can be resolved but the key is to seek help and know there is help available to you.
When talking about memories, many of our clients say that “it no longer feels important’, ‘It feels really distant now’, ‘it no longer feels really terrible to think about it’ after working with us.
What is trauma?
Trauma usually follows an event that threatens your security and sense of the world. A trauma can take some time to recover from especially if it is particularly shocking. Trauma produces feelings of terror, shock and fear. It can also include threats to your integrity or major loss (e.g. discovery of an affair, abrupt end to a marriage or job) that were not life threatening. Childhood abuse or neglect are also events of trauma that many people face.
What are the symptoms of trauma?
- Changes in mood: anxiety, depression, anger
- Changes in thinking: flashbacks, memory loss, confusion
- Changes in behaviour: avoidance of triggers, disruption of routines, poor sleep
A trauma reaction can last days, weeks, months or even years depending on the severity of the traumatic event. With the support of loved ones and the professional assistance of a trained psychologist you can recover.
