Autism Assessment Perth

Autism Assessment Perth: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Assessment at Aresolution

At Aresolution, we provide a comprehensive, collaborative and individualised approach to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) assessments in Perth for children aged 3-10 years. This enables us to gain a thorough understanding of your child’s unique developmental, cognitive, and social profile., in determining whether an Autism diagnosis is a good fit for your child’s behaviours and challenges.

Our process follows the recommendations in the “Autism CRC National Guideline for the Assessment and Diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorders in Australia.

What is Involved in an ASD Assessment?

Our ASD assessment process typically includes the following steps:

  1. Initial Consultation and Intake (1 hour) We gather preliminary information from you about your child, such as their developmental history and behaviours, to help us tailor the assessment. We’ll also provide an estimation of costs and explain the assessment process. At this appointment, you and your psychologist will also decide if an Autism assessment is the right step for your child at this point, and if not, your psychologist will provide a recommendation on what may be more appropriate.
  2. Parent and Teacher Questionnaires Standardised questionnaires completed by parents and teachers offer insights into your child’s functioning at home and school, particularly regarding social, communication, and adaptive skills. These are typically given to you and your child’s educator to complete outside of sessions.
  3. Direct Assessment (6-8 hours) This core component involves:
    • Diagnostic Interviews (2-3 hours): We gather comprehensive information about your child’s early development and current behaviours using structured interviews..
    • Cognitive Assessment (2-3 hours): Depending on the child’s needs, we may conduct a cognitive assessment using the WISC-V or WPPSI-IV to help identify their strengths and challenges, or determine if there are additional intellectual difficulties
    • Behavioural Observations (1-2 hours): We observe the child’s social and communication behaviours. These observations help us understand how your child interacts and behaves in different environments, and may include the clinic, at school, and/or at home.
  4. Scoring and Report Writing (4-6 hours) After the assessment, we prepare a detailed report summarising your child’s cognitive and social profile, observations, and any applicable diagnoses, along with recommendations.
  5. Feedback Session (1 hour) We meet with parents to discuss the results and provide recommendations for school and home-based interventions.

At any time during the assessment process, we may request to liaise with other professionals who work with your child, and/or that your child be assessed by other professionals (such as a speech pathologist or paediatrician). This is done to obtain a more complete clinical picture of your child’s presentation in their everyday environment or provide specialist guidance to explore alternative explanations for presenting signs and/or symptoms.

Time Commitment and Autism Assessment Costs

The ASD assessment typically takes 12 to 15 hours in total, depending on individual needs. The cost is $240 per hour, so you should expect the full assessment cost to range from $2,880 and above. To make a booking you need to pay the initial consultation fee upfront $240 and then a further 11 hours of assessment at the end of your initial consultation. Additional time is billed at a prorata basis. Please note that we are unable to provide you with the assessment report until full payment for all services (including the report writing) has been made.

To be eligible for Medicare rebates for an ASD assessment, a valid referral from a paediatrician (not GP) is necessary.

Why Choose Aresolution for ASD Assessments?

We are dedicated to providing individualised and comprehensive assessments using evidence-based tools and the National Guidelines for assessing and diagnosing Autism Spectrum Disorders in Australia, ensuring accurate diagnoses and meaningful recommendations. Our approach is thorough, collaborative, and aims to meet each child and family’s specific needs.

We collect information from a range of sources, and include interactions and observations of your child in their everyday environments, not just by speaking to you or observing your child over telehealth or in the clinic. Behaviours relevant to a clinical diagnosis are likely to vary according to different environmental contexts, so it is important that information is collected about your child in a variety of settings during an assessment of ASD concerns.

Our Autism assessor, Rachael Tan, is a Clinical Psychologist with over a decade of experience working with children with developmental disabilities, including Autism.

FAQ

Early intervention is highly beneficial for children with developmental difficulties. In many cases, a psychologist can help provide recommendations for early interventions/other services, such as therapy and parent support, while a client is waiting for a paediatrician’s assessment or medical follow-up.

There is no guarantee that your child will be diagnosed with Autism. Our assessment process seeks to accurately determine whether your child’s symptoms/behaviours meet the criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder (according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5th edition). If ASD is not the right fit for your child’s symptoms/behaviours, we will provide an indication of what may be more relevant to your child’s situation, based on the information gathered during the assessment.

Yes, but to be eligible for Medicare rebates for an ASD assessment, a valid referral from a paediatrician is necessary. The current Medicare rebate for ASD assessments by a psychologist is $96.65 per session, and only applicable to sessions where your child is in attendance for the assessment.

Please note that without a valid paediatrician referral, you will not be able to claim any rebates from Medicare.

We are a private clinic that can provide assessment consultation advice and service without a referral.

A paediatrician referral/sign off is not specifically required for an ASD assessment/diagnosis, however, we highly recommend that your child undergoes a medical evaluation to assist with understanding whether there are medical causes and/or comorbidities that may help explain your child’s presentation and to inform future clinical care. This can be done prior to or during the assessment process. The National Guideline recommends this be a medical practitioner with specialist registration in community child health, general paediatrics, psychiatry or neurology, or who has a general registration with at least six years of relevant experience in assessing neurodevelopmental disorders.

However, in order to be eligible for Medicare rebates for an ASD assessment, a valid referral from a paediatrician is necessary.

Before booking your Initial Consultation with us, we highly recommend that you at least:

1) Obtain a referral from your GP.

2) Check the requirements for the ASD assessment/diagnosis with the appropriate body, if you are wanting to use the report for specific reasons (e.g., Department of Education, NDIS).
