Applecross Community Psychologists
Experienced and Trusted Trauma Psychologists
Traumas, whether significant or seemingly minor, ensnare us in repetitive cycles of dysfunctional behaviors, negative cognitions, and challenging emotions. However, many individuals remain oblivious to their entanglement in habitual reactions and thought patterns rooted in past traumas. Often, we instinctively recoil from confronting the concept of trauma, rather than leaning into the opportunity for growth.
Encountering trauma can significantly influence various aspects of your life, affecting relationships with loved ones and performance at work or school. Its important to recognize that you’re not alone, and healing from past experiences is achievable.
At Aresolution we are dedicated to supporting individuals of diverse backgrounds and ages in overcoming traumatic events. Our team comprises compassionate PTSD/trauma psychologists who offer personalised, evidence-based counseling to assist you in managing symptoms and navigating the daily challenges associated with PTSD/trauma.
Recognising trauma, its not always the ‘big stuff’
Big traumas are major, life-threatening events like natural disasters or assault, often leading to acute stress reactions like PTSD. Little traumas, such as ongoing emotional neglect or bullying, may seem less severe but can accumulate over time, eroding mental well-being. While big traumas are immediate and recognized, little traumas unfold gradually, sometimes going unnoticed. Both types can have lasting effects on mental health, necessitating therapeutic support for healing.
Your truama psychologist can help you explore the impact your experiences have on who you are today and how you interact with the world and environment.
What are the symptoms of trauma?
- Changes in mood: anxiety, depression, anger
- Changes in thinking: flashbacks, memory loss, confusion
- Changes in behaviour: avoidance of triggers, disruption of routines, poor sleep
A trauma reaction can last days, weeks, months or even years depending on the severity of the traumatic event. With the support of loved ones and the professional assistance of a trained psychologist you can recover.

Effective therapy for trauma:
Therapeutic approaches for addressing trauma encompass a variety of evidence-based interventions aimed at promoting healing and resilience. Our psychologists, like Dr Sarah Woodhouse advocates for a holistic approach to trauma therapy, integrating techniques such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR), mindfulness-based interventions, and expressive therapies. These approaches focus on processing traumatic memories, building coping skills, and fostering a sense of safety and empowerment.
Although EMDR therapy stands out as a highly effective method for addressing trauma, it may not be suitable for everyone. Therefore, your psychologist will assess your individual circumstances and long-term mental health objectives to identify the most appropriate approach. Regardless of the chosen therapeutic method, our team of psychologists prioritises delivering deeply impactful trauma therapy tailored to your specific requirements.
Our Trauma Psychology Team
Henry James
Psychologist
Henry has spent a number of years working with people who have experienced sexual abuse, both recent and during childhood. He spent a significant period of time working in a sexual assault response service in Carnavon and has found that being a male therapist he is able to provide depth to the healing for many women who have experienced abuse. Henry brings empathy and a caring understanding to working with clients who have experienced sexual abuse, and feels strongly about creating a space in which clients can discuss and process these events at their own pace. Henry is able to help clients during this process, work on grounding techniques and emotional regulation, and in time help clients to work on alleviating the strong emotionalresponse that can be associated with thoughts of the abuse.
